A Review – Chic urban dining at The Glass Lounge

As far as date night goes, hubby is quite happy for me to choose where we go. It’s not that he doesn’t care where we go, but he knows by now that being the big foodie that I am, I’ll politely listen to his suggestions but will more than likely end up choosing a different place anyway.

I’m quite happy to do this, especially when there are so many fab money-saving choices on the easy to use 2-for-1 The Entertainer app. We hadn’t used the app yet and I was keen to try it out since everyone that has it raves about it.

As it was date night and we hadn’t gone out together for a while, I wasn’t looking for a pub n grub or burger joint. We were going to see Monark, my fave South African band, later that night at Café Roux in town so I wanted somewhere close by. It was a gorgeous evening, one of those magical, calm autumn Cape Town evenings. Stepping out in a summer dress and heels, we decided to try the uber-chic The Glass Lounge, a swanky new cocktail and tapas spot at The Cape Milner.

The outside dining deck was closed that evening but that wasn’t a problem as the interior of The Glass Lounge is where you want to be. The décor is elegant and stylish with a glamorous, modern twist with Art Deco influences seen throughout. I especially loved the beautiful big orchids that were placed around the restaurant. Despite the luxurious, plush surroundings, the atmosphere is relaxed and we were greeted with friendly smiles by the barman and waitrons. Seated at a corner table, we had a stunning view of Table Mountain while the sun was setting. The glass roof is perfect for a romantic evening while watching the stars on a clear night.

I was definitely in the mood for a cool cocktail and ordered a Classic Mojito, my favourite. They offer a number of signature cocktails, as well as the classics such as Cosmopolitans and Daiquiris. The Mojito was made just the way I like it. I always compare every Mojito I have to the ones we enjoyed in Havana, Cuba. And this one stood up to my Cuban memory very nicely.

While chatting and sipping, we looked at the menu. The dinner menu isn’t large, but should satisfy everyone’s taste buds. There are a few options for starters, mains and after dinner delights. After going back and forth for some time (I have a habit of doing this regardless of the menu size), I finally chose the Confit Pork Belly with quince, smoked leeks, braised lentils and jus. I swopped the braised lentils for crushed baby potatoes as I’m not a huge fan of lentils. And besides, pork and potatoes go together so well! Hubby opted for the 200g Rump Steak with creamed spinach, chips and a mushroom sauce. Once you select your cut of meat, you can select two sides and a sauce which is included in the price.

I wanted a glass of red wine to enjoy with dinner and asked about their house red. The barman happily offered me a taster before I ordered a glass of Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot. Hubby thoroughly enjoyed his steak but wasn’t a fan of the mushroom sauce. The sauce should’ve been rich and creamy but was rather watery, almost as if the mushrooms had been sautéed with butter. My Confit Pork Belly was tasty and delicious except for one thing – the crackling. It wasn’t crispy at all (eek!) and quite chewy. It took me awhile to get through just one piece of crackling. What a letdown. Other than that, I enjoyed it and I think the crushed baby potatoes saved the day.

We didn’t have time for dessert as we were heading over to Café Roux, but there were some yummy sounding sweet treats that I will have to try next time.

The Glass Lounge is the place to be, whether you’re looking for a quiet, intimate setting for a romantic dinner or a place to catch up with friends over cool cocktails and tasty tapas.

They’ve introduced T.G.I FRIDAYS offering 50% off on selected cocktails and craft beers and complimentary truffle and cheese croquettes. There is also a monthly prize draw for a chance to win a one night stay for two at The Cape Milner. How great is that?

If you haven’t got plans for this Friday night (or any night for that matter) or you’re looking for a fab place for date night, I would highly recommend The Glass Lounge for a great night out with good food, delicious drinks and friendly service in a relaxed yet stylish setting. I’d love to hear about your experience once you’ve been.

Such a shame about the mushroom sauce & pork crackling, otherwise, it sounds like a great date night venue. I can’t wait to get to Capetown. The food scene sounds excellent!
