IMPORTANT NOTICE (DATE CHANGE) – Celebrate Garden Day at the Cellars-Hohenort’s ‘Open Gardens’

IMPORTANT NOTICE REGARDING GARDEN DAY AT THE CELLARS-HOHENORT

The weather report for Cape Town predicts a very rainy weekend, and so The Cellars Hohenort has made the decision to postpone its Garden Day festivities in aid of St Luke’s Hospice, to the weekend of November 27 and 28.

In celebration of Garden Day, The Cellars-Hohenort in Constantia (Cape Town) is opening its magnificent gardens to members of the public on the weekend of 16 and 17 October 2021. All proceeds are in aid of the hotels chosen charity, St Luke’s Hospice, which provides palliative care to more than 650 patients daily, as well as support to their families.

Spring has sprung in the Cape and flowers are in full bloom, providing the opportunity for those with green fingers and an interest in gardens, to down their own garden tools, relax and enjoy the warm hospitality of The Liz McGrath Collection.

The gardens will be open between 11:00 and 17:00 on Saturday and Sunday (16 and 17 October 2021). Tickets may be bought on arrival at The Cellars Hohenort at R100 per person (free for children under 2 and R50 for children up to the age of 10). The ticket includes guided garden tours throughout the day, as well as a cup of tea and a scone to be enjoyed on the terrace or Hohenort lawns.

Testament to a rich history, trees in the surrounding forest of the gardens at The Cellars-Hohenort date back 300 years to when it was known as Klaasenbosch Farm. The garden spreads across nine acres and boasts magnificent views of the Table Mountain range. It contains myriad of delights, from the Picnic Garden and Hohenort Lawns which are favourite wedding venues, to a structured garden with a beautiful water feature, and several ponds. The Formal Rose Garden includes the Liz McGrath Rose, which was hybridised in 2003 to commemorate the late Mrs McGrath’s 80th birthday. Other eco-zones within the gardens include the Herb, Vegetable and Citrus Gardens which grow fresh produce for the hotel kitchens. 950 vines are watered by Mother Nature and produce approximately 500 bottles of The Cellars Hohenort dessert wine, Vin de Hohenort, each year.

ABOUT ST LUKE’S COMBINED HOSPICES

St Luke’s Combined Hospice was established in 1980 providing palliative care to patients after facing a variety of incurable and life-threatening illnesses and diseases. By caring for the dying, the dedicated caregivers of St Luke’s Combined Hospices bring life and loving care to over 650 patients a day. The organisation’s unique and holistic approach has made it a national leader in palliative care. St Luke’s Combined Hospices is not a place where people only go to die. It’s a caring and compassionate environment that focuses on quality of life, on making every moment count, no matter how many of those moments are left. Because there are times, when a disease no longer responds to curative treatment, and when a terminally ill patient needs more than just relief from physical pain, they need psychosocial, spiritual and bereavement support. This support extends to our patient’s immediate families and relatives for a period of up to 13 months after the death of a family member. This support is given, irrespective of the patient’s ability to pay for the service, and regardless of race or religion. For this purpose, we have a dedicated interdisciplinary team comprising of Community Nurses, Home Based Carers, Medical Doctors, Social Workers, Spiritual – and Bereavement Counsellors. In-patient care comprises of an 18 bed Unit situated in Harfield Road, Kenilworth, Cape Town, South Africa and a dedicated MDR-TB and HIV Unit comprising of 12 beds in Khayelitsha, Cape Town, South Africa.
