Thursdays Chef’s Table Food and Wine Pairing at The Turbine

Wining and dining at my favourite Knysna hotel, The Turbine Boutique Hotel and Spa, is always a culinary delight. And now, Thursdays feature the Chef’s Table Food and Wine Pairing (three courses paired with recommended in-house wines at R295 per person). It sounds utterly delicious and really well priced. Read about my fabulous stay at this iconic and unique boutique hotel and find out more about the food and wine pairings taking place once a month from June to October 2022.

“Situated on Thesen Islands, considered one of the most prestigious locations on the Garden Route is one of the most unusual hotels in South Africa – once an old Power Station, now the 5 star Turbine Boutique Hotel and Spa.

Surrounded by water on three sides, The Turbine offers luxury accommodation, conference facilities, the Turbine Spa plus two restaurants – the vibey Gastro Pub with Happy Hour and live music every Friday, and a serious rival to other Knysna restaurants – the 90-seater Island Café.

The Island Café, open every day of the week, offers breakfast (7am – 11am), light lunch (12h00 – 16h00) and gourmet dinner (18h00 – 21h30) serving up extraordinary dishes from diverse a la carte menus. It has a few seating options – you can choose to sit indoors in the airy, vibrant interior where tables with vibrantly coloured chairs, nestle between the original turbines or you can enjoy a meal outdoors on the spacious terrace and soak up the view of the canals.

And on Thursdays there is the Chef’s Table Food and Wine Pairing (three courses paired with recommended in-house wines at R295 per person) and on the last Thursday of every month there are the Wine(or Gin/Beer) and Food Pairing Dinner evenings at 18h30, in partnership with various award-winning Wine Estates and featuring live music. The upcoming line-up includes:

  • Thursday 16 June – A journey through the Winelands with Jane Simon with music by pianist Baden Hall
  • Thursday 7 July – Alvi’s Bubbly – Alvi’s Drift Winery with Seafood and Oysters and music by saxophonist Jaco Kriek
  • Thursday 25 August – Meerhof Wines food and Wine Dinner with music by violinist Minx

The 5-star Turbine Boutique Hotel and Spa is situated on Thesen Islands in Knysna. Intuitive architecture pays homage to the old power station it once was. Accommodation comprises 26 rooms – luxury and standard rooms, a honeymoon suite and two expansive self-contained suites adjacent to the hotel. There are excellent conference facilities for business visitors – two conference rooms with free Wi-Fi, full audio-visual facilities and tailored catering packages. The recent installation of a generator ensures that load shedding outages are a thing of the past. Group bookings are welcome for events, weddings and small conferences. The Turbine’s 90-seater Island Café Restaurant, with inside tables nestled between the original turbines and its outside tables overlooking either the canal or the pool deck offers breakfast, lunch and dinner, and also monthly food and wine pairings. The vibey Gastro Pub offers classic pub meals with a delicious turbine twist on-tap draught beer, a comprehensively stocked cellar and glorious lagoon sunset views – perfect for the ‘Happy Hour’ every Friday evening with a live music line-up of local musicians. The Turbine Spa has a wide range of treatments for hotel guests and day visitors and the hotel’s very own adventure centre – the Turbine Water Club – arranges a variety of water and land-based activities such as lagoon cruises, forest walks and bicycle hire.”
