Starlings Cafe – a little gem in the Southern suburbs

It’s been a fun week with hubby at home. We’ve been able to do things together that we usually can’t do as he’s at work. We hardly ever go out for breakfast or brunch as most weekend mornings are somewhat lazy affairs hanging around the house. So I thought “Let’s do brunch for a change!”

I’m sure most of you have noticed that the amount of traffic on Cape Town roads has increased rather drastically now that holidaymakers from up North and other parts of the world are descending upon the lovely Mother City. We didn’t want to venture too far from home and spend most of it stuck on the road. As I love to explore new places and spaces, I thought of Starlings Cafe in Claremont. I’d been keen to try out this quaint and somewhat hidden little Southern suburbs gem for a while and today I got my chance – yay!

It took us no time at all to get there from Pinelands, but a bit longer to find parking. We parked some way down the road but it didn’t matter as it was a lovely, sunny day. They don’t take bookings so be prepared to wait if they’re busy, which they were. To me, this is a sign of popularity and it usually means that the food and service is good. I don’t enjoy entering a restaurant or café when there are only a few people seated or worse, none at all! We were offered some delicious, freshly squeezed orange juice while we hung around the waiting area. Before we knew it, we were being led to a lovely, tranquil garden area beside a soothing water feature – what bliss!

We ordered some cappuccinos and sat chatting for a while before placing our order. The breakfast menu has a wide variety of delicious sounding items, including vegetarian options. I knew exactly what I wanted as I’d been craving this for some time – Eggs Benedict with salmon! This has to be one of my favourite breakfasts ever.  Hubby ordered the same – he acquired quite a taste for Eggs Benedict while we cruised the Eastern Mediterranean last year.

It really was quite delicious! Soft, fluffy poached eggs on 2 slices of whole-wheat toast with salmon and roast tomatoes on the side. The Hollandaise sauce was creamy and smooth and definitely homemade.

The atmosphere is relaxed and tranquil even though it was very busy.  Starlings Cafe gets my vote for tasty and fresh food, friendly service and a lovely setting. As I’m writing this, it’s way past lunchtime yet my tummy is still full and happy.  I will definitely go back soon to try their lunch – I can only imagine it to be as yummy as their breakfasts. Once you spot the big hedge, you’ll know you’re at the right place.
