The picturesque landscape is utterly breathtaking and it feels as if you have stepped into an enchanting fairytale. The long driveway winds its way past fragrant fynbos, lush green fields and sprawling vineyards, with the impressive Klein Drakenstein mountains providing a magnificent backdrop. It is futile to resist stopping to take Instaworthy snapshots before you reach the Manor House, so just go with it.

Welcome to Brookdale Estate.

The stunning surroundings captivate and heighten all your senses, enveloping you in a state of awe and wonder. This is the effect that Brookdale had on me from the get-go. Our magical one-night stay was exceptional in every way. It isn’t often one experiences an exclusive world-class country estate that “ticks all the right boxes”. You’ll find it right here in the beautiful wine region of Paarl.

It won’t take you long to realise that you have discovered a truly special place. What was once a forgotten vineyard, has now been transformed into a luxury retreat that exudes elegance and tranquillity, a serene sanctuary for the body, mind and soul.

BROOKDALE MANOR HOUSE

The epitome of a stylish and sophisticated country retreat, Brookdale Manor House is simply exquisite. It is an ideal destination for not only individual travellers but families and small groups of friends travelling together, away from the crowds. Thoughtful curation and attention to detail have resulted in the most beautiful interior space that delights and soothes you at the same time. Large windows in each room allow natural light to filter in, offering stunning mountain and vineyard views.

Accommodating 12 people in six beautiful bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms – five in the main house and a sixth en-suite bedroom in the building adjacent – the spacious suites offer a serene haven to unwind with all modern amenities and luxuries to ensure a relaxing stay. The supremely comfortable beds are endorsed by the Queen of England, so a restful night’s sleep is guaranteed.

Good to know: Two children under 12 may share with their parents.

The luxurious Manor House has been designed in such a way that it offers privacy with a number of living and dining spaces. There is a natural flow to the living areas, both inside and out, resulting in a relaxed ambience allowing you to gently explore at your own pace.

With 67 hectares of vineyards and gardens, indulge your curiosity and wander around the beautifully landscaped gardens, including an organic herb and vegetable garden, and lush vineyards. Breathe in the fresh country air, enjoy a mindful stroll while taking in the spectacular views, stop to smell the roses and revel in being alive, surrounded by nature’s beauty.

The outdoor entertainment area is another striking feature at Brookdale. The shimmering swimming pool is the place to be to cool off on hot summer days. Complete with a pool house and bar, it is an idyllic spot to enjoy sensational sunsets and sundowners. I could easily spend an entire day here; sipping on a glass of Serendipity Rosé, grazing on Chef Gary’s delicious dishes, cooling dips in the pool and just having a lazy dreamy day. Sounds fantastic, doesn’t it?

BROOKDALE WINE

UK-born Tim Rudd, proprietor of Brookdale Estate, and Jacus Marais, the estate’s wine sales manager, introduced us to the Brookdale and Mason Road ranges that evening. Tim and Kiara Scott, their immensely talented female winemaker, like to experiment with the unique terroir to produce wines with character and elegance.

“I have set out to create a playground for the curious and a space for experimentation. Our varietals are unusual, our location is outside of the well-known, and our approach is rather unconventional. Brookdale’s wines will be a product of passion, of thought, of the freedom to be creative and of remarkable attention to detail and quality. I couldn’t be more excited.” – Tim Rudd – Proprietor

This is exactly what Tim and Kiara have achieved. I took a few moments to marvel at the exquisite natural beauty before me. Overlooking the rolling vineyards and majestic mountains, we tucked into Gary’s freshly baked breads, homemade hummus and olives with great relish. As the sun set on a serene afternoon, we tasted our way through the Brookdale Mason Road range featuring Chenin Blanc, Serendipity Rosé and Syrah, as well as Brookdale Premium Chenin Blanc.

The fine wine collection is guaranteed to please a variety of wine connoisseurs. My favourites? Mason Road Serendipity Rosé came about by pure chance and is a blend of Syrah, Grenache Noir and Cinsault. This salmon-coloured medium-bodied rosé is elegant, sophisticated and the perfect addition to your summer sipping list.

The wooded Mason Road Syrah caught my attention immediately with its deep, purple colour and alluring palate. Once again, boundaries were pushed as the Syrah was produced from young vines released in the same year as harvesting. The freedom to explore boundaries has certainly paid off where “old-world elegance meets new world bravery.”

The latest news from the vineyard is that Brookdale Estate is now a proud member of the prestigious Old Vine Project. Brookdale Chenin Blanc hails from a certified block that was planted back in 1985. It is one of only a few certified old Chenin vines in the Drakenstein region. Read the full story here.

FINE FARE

Nurturing wellness and well-being are key philosophies at Brookdale. This restorative approach is used throughout the estate, including the vineyards, gardens, experiences, wines and food. Our stay coincided with World Vegan Month and dinner that evening was a sumptuous vegan feast prepared by Chef Gary and his team.

“I have always been someone who shrugs off labels when it comes to my cooking style. I have spent many years working as a private chef as well as managing kitchens across the country, and as a result I enjoy cooking – period. No specific styles, no single ingredients. Thoughtful food – that’s my philosophy – health, wellness and balance in both flavour and nutrition.” – Executive Chef Gary Coetzee

I strive to eat several vegetarian or vegan dishes each week, so I did not miss having protein with dinner. In fact, the fresh, flavourful and creative menu was sensational and wowed us from start to end. Most of the ingredients are sourced from their organic vegetable gardens and orchards. Zero food wastage is a top priority in the kitchen and they focus on low food miles by sourcing local, seasonal ingredients.

Each dish was delightfully tantalising. Watermelon ‘Tartar” and Raw Cruciferous Salad to start, all accompanied by the perfect ingredients to enhance the natural flavours and aromas. Cauliflower Risotto, followed by a Chickpea Pancake and a sweet ending that blew my mind – Raspberry Chocolate Ganache Tart with Berry Sorbet. Utterly delicious, wholesome fare that was beautifully presented.  I would happily dine on this fine vegan fare any day of the week.

Mackenzie and I donned our walking gear and enjoyed an invigorating morning stroll through the vineyards, followed by a delectable breakfast. A tranquil start to the day sets the tone for a relaxing and enjoyable day ahead. Why rush when you’re on holiday, don’t you agree?

Exciting things are happening at Brookdale, among them breaking ground on their cellar, wine tasting centre and restaurant. Watch this space for news of opening dates.
