FOODIE FIND – VADAS SMOKEHOUSE & BAKERY

Spending time at Spier Wine Farm is always a treat. The popular wine-tourism destination is constantly evolving and places a large emphasis on sustainable farming, empowering the local community through their Growing for Good learning initiatives and ethical environmental practices.

The fact that I really enjoy discovering and exploring wine farms and estates is no secret. When said wine farm or estate offers a variety of dining options, I’m even happier. Spier certainly caters for foodies of all types and their newest eatery, Vadas Smokehouse & Bakery, is a tasty addition to the farm’s thriving food scene.

While Vadas Smokehouse & Bakery has been around for a while, I only recently tried it for the first time a few weeks back. Mackenzie from On the Bay Retreat suggested we meet up here for a long overdue catch up. Overlooking the lush lawns and ancient oaks of Spier’s beautifully restored Werf, we met up on a balmy winter’s day and sat soaking up the sun while sipping on 2019 Spier Chardonnay/Pinot Noir; a lovely salmon pink off-dry rosé wine.

Oak trees and lush lawns at Spier.

Reading through the enticing menu of snacks, smoked meats and fish, sides and more, my mouth began to salivate in no time. I think my tastebuds knew they were in for an exciting time! Fire and smoke are central to their delicious range of pasture-reared meats, with many supplied by Spier’s Farmer Angus. It was good to see that they offer a selection of organic vegetarian and vegan options.

Mackenzie suggested we share some dishes to get a taste of the menu, which proved to be an excellent idea. But this ain’t no ordinary menu! Everything is taken up a notch and is next level AMAZING! I kid you not – broccoli has never tasted this good! Sharing is very much encouraged with family-style platters that you can order for the table. During the winter months, the appetizing Chef’s Platter is just R200 per person. That’s a whopping 50% saving! (T&C’s apply – excludes Sundays and public holidays) Little ones are also catered for with a kiddies menu.

Just LOOK at the deliciousness!

So, what did we order? After some fairly quick decision-making, we opted for the Duck Fat Fried Chips with Truffle Aioli, Pork Belly with perfect crackling (and I mean PERFECT!) and Pumpkin and Sage Arancini with a Custard Sauce. The humble broccoli was seriously to die for! How could it not be when it’s fire roasted with Mustard Cider Vinaigrette, Smoked Stanford Cheese and Macadamia Nuts? Don’t believe me? Go and taste! PS. Admittedly not my finest #foodie pics, but sometimes you’ve just got to dive right in because it’s THAT good!

Smoked Pork Belly with Apple Ketchup. Another winning dish!
I just can’t get enough!

Acclaimed Chef PJ Vadas has certainly learnt a thing or two during his stellar career that has seen him working for Chef Gordon Ramsay in London and New York, a goal he set for himself when he was 16 and knew he wanted to be a chef. The delicious dishes are jam-packed with luscious flavour, and I can’t wait to head back and taste more of their exceptional menu. It definitely won’t be the last time they see me. His other goal? To own his own restaurant someday 🙂

I loved the relaxed ambience and the friendly, efficient service we received from the staff. I also found the prices to be reasonable. Check out their delicious seasonal menu here. Everything is homemade and you can truly taste this in each dish. Quality produce is sourced locally while sustainability is key in their kitchen.

Let me know if you’ve been to this cool culinary hotspot that isn’t shy to tantalize your tastebuds.

Yours in Travel, Food & Wine
xoxo
